Allow me to introduce you to one of the best shows on television today.
LaFemmeNikita began life as a feature film by Luc Besson, entitled simply "Nikita".
The series is based upon this film, and debuted in January of 1997. It is the story of a
street kid, Nikita, who is framed and convicted of murder. Once in jail, she
is drugged and, upon awakening, finds herself in a strange, cold place of steel and
state-of-the-art technology 500 feet underground. She is told that the outside world thinks
she is dead, (she committed suicide in prison) and that if she wants to continue living she
will now have to work for "the most covert anti-terrorist group on the planet." Nikita then tells
us what she will have to do to survive in this dark place:
The show stars the lovely Peta Wilson in the title role, with co-stars Roy Dupuis as Michael (Nikita's trainer, mentor, and possibly much more), Eugene Robert Glazer as Operations, Alberta Watson as Madeline, Don Francks as Walter, and Matthew Ferguson as Birkoff. Together, they form a wonderful ensemble cast that draws us into the world of Section One.
Beautifully written and wonderfully acted, LaFemmeNikita is anything but "formula"
television. As a member of the..ahem...over 40 crowd, I cannot stress enough how difficult it
is to find television programming that suits my more 'mature' tastes.
